We may be a long way from Pennsylvania, but we love what's going on in Philadelphia lately! The city has quite an ambitious goal for the next several years – to plant 300,000 trees by the year 2015. According to Philly.com, the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) helped to jump start the effort yesterday with a new program that provides free trees to the faculty and staff. The goal of the project is to create a more sustainable landscape within the city, as well as create a greener campus at Penn.
Anne Papageorge, the vice president of facilities and real-estate services at Penn, said the program at Penn will provide 300 trees to Penn faculty and staff that live in the city. Those recipients will also receive a seminar to help them plant their trees in their backyards.
The goal of 300,000 trees was a part of Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter’s environmental plan for the city. The plan to “re-tree” the city is part of an effort to improve air quality, offer shade and protection, enhance the beauty of Philadelphia neighborhoods, and replace trees lost due to the development that has occurred in the past few decades, Philly.com reports. Since Nutter took office in 2008, 28,000 trees have been planted.
