They're back and for the second year in a row!

If you are planning on doing any yard work you better think about covering up your arms and neck. Kansas City is experiencing an invasion of a shutterstock_289656836-1.jpgmicroscopic kind that feeds on and falls from our beautiful Kansas City Oak trees.

Oak mites or Itch mites (how appropriate right!) are microscopic pests that feed on the larva of other pests that live in our Kansas City Oak Tree's leaves.

Humans accidentally become hosts as we live our normal lives. The pests fall from the leaves and become airborne so, there is no telling where they will end up (watch those open windows)

shutterstock_358803032.jpgAlthough, the bites are itchy and uncomfortable for a while, they are not dangerous. Always watch for allergic reactions and seek medical attention if a reaction occurs.

Regular bug sprays do nothing so put them away! Pesticides do nothing so don't waste your money.  Sometimes you just have to let nature take her course.

Keep an eye on your Kansas City Oak trees. If they have brown leaves with crusty edges that might shutterstock_86864749.jpgbe a sign Oak mite activity is present. Shut your windows until the "mite shower" is over in             late October early November.

Here are a few ways to treat Oak Mite bites naturally

  1. No Harm, It was only an accident!  They are only searching for food and the only way they know if you are their host is if they taste you!!!! I think we are disqualified!
  2. Shower immediatly after any activity in the yard and put your cloths in the wash.  You may be disqualified but the mite might stay on your body.  Make sure you wash them off to eliminate any more uncomfortable bites.  The pest will not live for more than 24 hours without a food source!
  3. Calamine and Cortisone
  4. Essential Oils like Palmarosa, Sandalwood, Lemon, Lavendar & Geranium are great at relieving the itcy symptoms of the bites!  You can purchase these oils at Upgrage Yourself Now, A local health and life coach with a Yoga twist!
