While adding trees to your landscape is a great way to improve your property’s curb appeal, you need to make sure you choose where to plant them carefully so that they don’t cause problems in the future when they grow. The following are a few tips to keeping mind to help plant your trees in the right spot:
- Buildings – When planting a tree, consider how tall and wide it will grow when it matures. Trees that have large or rounded canopies when they mature are going to cause you problems if you plant them too close to a building.

- Hardscape – Many trees will develop surface roots, which means you won’t want to plant them too close to hardscape, such as sidewalks. Otherwise, their roots can end up growing underneath and up through the hardscape.
- Utilities – All trees should be planted at least 10 feet away from power lines so that the branches won’t eventually interfere with them. Although roots won’t damage water lines or sewer lines, they can find their way in through cracks, so plant them further away just in case.
