Many homeowners include a fruit tree of some kind in their yard, such as apple or pear trees. Just like any other tree in your yard, a fruit tree requires proper care and maintenance in order to stay healthy, but also in order to produce the fruit that we enjoy to eat. It is especially important to take good care of these trees in the summer, as summer care helps fruit trees produce a great yield.

If you’ve included fruit trees in your yard, take note of these tips we found from The Plantman.

  • Be sure to check the leaves, trunks, and branches for signs of disease or pests. Also, check the fruit itself for signs of diseases like apple scab.
  • If the tree was staked, check the stake to ensure that it is still capable of supporting the new once new growth begins to push out. Inspect the stake just above and below ground level to see if the wood has begun to rot, which could cause it to break and take the tree down with it.
  • Ward off heat stress by making sure your fruit trees stay hydrated. Most fruit trees need a deep watering about once a week. Adding mulch around the base of the tree will slow down evaporation and help keep the roots cool.

These suggestions will not only help you keep your fruit trees looking great, but also help the trees produce tasty treats for you to enjoy!
