Why do we always want it all? We want lots of shopping options, great urban housing like lofts and townhomes, but then we also demand nearby green spaces filled with towering trees. While often these trees are lush and full, it can be a challenge for them to survive in many of our smog, noisy, and crowded urban environments.

Soil is one of the first problems trying to get trees to thrive in a urban setting. They are often planted near concrete and in soil which is nutrient deficient. Often the soil is full of contaminants and bedrock making it hard for the root system to survive.

Then above ground, trees are fighting for space with electrical lines, buildings and signage. Plus many times urban trees have to be pruned in certain ways that aren't naturally conducive to a long lifespan.

Frequently because of placement, urban trees don't receive the necessary light needed for optimum growth. Often watering is only done when Mother Nature decides to make it rain. Smog, contaminated runoff, and injuries caused by humans, animals, and automobiles are all additional challenges faced.
