Known for its beautiful, tree-lined streets, cozy homes, and neighborhood feel, Westwood’s trees play a major role in keeping the area lush, shaded, and welcoming. From the scenic sidewalks near **Rainbow Boulevard** and **State Line Road** to the peaceful residential blocks around **Westwood Park**, trees are part of what makes this small city so special. But with that natural beauty comes a few challenges. Westwood’s trees face a mix of **urban stress, compacted soil, pest activity, and unpredictable Kansas weather** — all of which can weaken even mature trees over time. Without consistent professional care, small problems can develop into major safety or health issues. At **Cartwright Tree Care**, our arbor consultants understand the unique environment of Westwood. We specialize in **preventative maintenance, pest control, and root zone health**, helping trees stay strong and safe through every Kansas season. Here’s a closer look at the most common tree issues in Westwood — and how our proactive approach helps prevent them. ### 1. Storm Damage Westwood experiences frequent **spring thunderstorms, heavy rain, and winter ice storms**, all of which can take a toll on local trees. Broken branches, leaning trunks, and uprooted trees are common after severe weather, especially in yards with older or top-heavy trees. Our **storm-prevention trimming and canopy management** services strengthen trees before storms strike. Afterward, our team provides **emergency tree removal and cleanup services** to quickly restore safety and prevent further property damage. ### 2. Emerald Ash Borer & Bagworms The **Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)** continues to threaten ash trees throughout Johnson County, while **bagworms** damage ornamental and evergreen trees across the region. Both pests can cause significant canopy loss and, if left untreated, eventual tree death. We offer **customized pest management plans** that include systemic treatments, inspections, and prevention programs. Protecting your trees early is the best way to avoid costly removals and preserve your landscape’s natural beauty. ### 3. Compacted Soil & Poor Drainage Much of Westwood’s soil is **clay-heavy and compacted**, especially in established neighborhoods. Compacted soil limits oxygen and water flow to the roots, while poor drainage can lead to standing water and stress during rainy months. Our **deep root fertilization and aeration treatments** restore soil health and help roots grow deeper and stronger. We also provide **drainage assessments** to improve water movement and prevent long-term root damage. ### 4. Root Rot & Fungal Diseases Trees in shaded or damp yards are more susceptible to **root rot, oak wilt, anthracnose, and other fungal infections**. These diseases spread quickly, especially during wet spring seasons, weakening trees and increasing the risk of structural failure. Our arborists provide **disease diagnosis, targeted treatments, and soil conditioning** to stop fungal infections before they spread. Routine care ensures your trees stay healthy, vibrant, and resilient. ### 5. Heat & Drought Stress Summers in Kansas can be brutal, with extended heat waves that dry out the soil and stress even mature trees. **Drought stress** can lead to leaf scorch, curling, and early leaf drop if trees don’t receive proper hydration. We help by offering **deep watering, mulching, and nutrient support** that maintain soil moisture and reduce heat stress. This consistent care keeps your trees healthy even through the hottest months. ### Professional Tree Services in Westwood, KS Whether your home is near **Westwood View Elementary**, the **Westwood City Hall**, or the tree-lined streets along **Rainbow Boulevard**, your trees deserve expert, ongoing care.
