Once again it's that time of year when homeowners begin worrying about the weather. Droughts have been becoming more common around the US and are a major concern. Here are some great tips on preparing your trees now to withstand longer periods without water.

  • Surround the base with organic mulch approximately four inches deep. Don't allow the mulch to actually touch the trunk to avoid problems with insects, fungus, and rot. Tree care experts recommend keeping the mulch six inches from the base of the tree.
  • Do not apply fertilizer to a tree when there is a shortage of moisture. The minerals in fertilizer can easily burn the roots, and it also stimulate top tree growth which puts stress on the overall root system.
  • Correctly prune your tree to remove dead and diseased branches which can drain a tree's overall physical health.
  • When watering set up a soaker hose, five gallon bucket drip system or soil needle to provide moisture to the deeper roots.
  • Take care when applying herbicides to your lawn to keep them away from your tree's root system. These chemicals can quickly harm those delicate roots.
