The Kansas Department of Agriculture reports that "all ash trees native to Kansas are susceptible toKSDA infestation by the emerald ash borer." Emerald ash borer are beetle larvae that bore into trees, tunneling between the bark and wood. Ash borers impede the movement of water and nutrients, eventually killing the tree.

Emerald ash borer prefer trees under stress, but are capable of killing healthy trees. The Missouri Department of Conservation states that all of Missouri's native ash trees (white, blue, green and pumpkin ash), as well as many horticultural cultivars are susceptible to EAB infestation.

Here are some tips to control and help eliminate emerald ash borer on your property:

  • Don't move firewood. EAB travels in firewood, and it is best to avoid any stick of wood that has traveled more than 50 miles from where it was cut.
  • Think twice about planting ash trees.
  • Contact a tree care specialist before the EAB spreads.
