tree maintenance Kansas City Source: stock.xchng

Just like our needs change when the weather gets cooler, the same holds true for our trees. Fall is the perfect time to handle all of that long neglected tree maintenance.

  • Begin by consulting a tree care professional to determine what, if any, pruning is required. It's important to have this completed before winter ice storms cause damaging branches to fall.
  • Aerate the soil around the trunk of the tree to help with drainage. Be careful not to go too deep and cause root damage.
  • Spread a six to eight foot diameter of mulch around the base, taking care that it doesn't come in direct contact with the tree trunk.
  • For young trees that may not yet have protective bark, wrap with paper tree wrap or tree tubes. This keeps the tree stem safe from inclement winter weather as well as deer, squirrels and other animals seeking a fresh food source.
  • Don't be afraid to plant new trees during the fall and early winter months. The colder temperatures assist new trees in establishing good root growth.
