There’s nothing quite like having fruit trees on your property, especially during the spring and summer seasons when they not only improve your property’s curb appeal but also yield delicious fruits! However, you will need to take care of them, especially during the colder seasons. The following are a few tips for doing so:
- Don’t inspect your fruit trees until the leaves all fall off. Look for sticky fluid seeping out of cracked bark, discoloration, unusual growths and bark that is falling off. Damaged or diseased fruit trees should be removed.
Source: Shutterstock - Check the structure of the trees. Make any pruning cuts that are necessary – fruit trees will heal quicker when pruning cuts are made during the late fall or winter. Remove branches that look like they are going to be growing into one another and cut out all dead wood.
- Use a dormant fruit spray or dormant oil spray to destroy pathogenic agents or chronic pests. Don’t use general insecticides if the tree has begun to bud.
