The emerald ash borer that has left ash trees in Kansas and several of our neighboring states dead or dying is not leaving any time soon. If you have ash trees that have succumbed to this pest or simply want to remove the preemptively, there are a number of different types of trees to consider as replacements. The following are a few great alternative trees in Kansas City that we recommend:

Hedge Maple – This tree grows to roughly 30 feet in height and is moderately salt-tolerant. It’s adapted to compaction as well as severe pruning. It can be easily transplanted during the spring and fall and is a great option for residential use because of its short, round shape.
  • Freeman Maple – This tree can reach upwards of 55 feet with a spread of up to 40 feet. Although it thrives better in moist soil, it is drought tolerant. The freeman maple is a great aesthetic choice because of its beautiful orange-red fall colors.
  • Upright European Hornbeam – This tree grows up to 35 feet and tolerates drought and heavy soil, although it is salt sensitive. This narrow tree provides an elegant look but can be a little slow to establish from bare root.

Consider these trees and contact Cartwright Tree Care for additional tree information.
