Thanksgiving is later this week, which signals the start of the holiday season. We know in the weeks to come, many families will head out to find the perfect tree to decorate for the holidays, so we thought it would be rather fun and festive to share some tips we’ve compiled from a few sources to help you select the perfect tree, as well as care for it, so that it will look great all season long.

Selecting a Tree

  • Buy a tree that’s been freshly-cut if at all possible. Common species used as Christmas trees include Scots pines, Douglas firs, white pines, and balsam firs.
  • If there are lots of needles on the ground around a tree, look elsewhere for your tree.
  • To check for freshness, pull your hand toward you along the tree branch. Needles shouldn’t fall off.

Caring for Your Tree

  • Use a traditional reservoir type of stand to maintain freshness and minimize needle loss once you’ve brought your tree home. Then, be sure to place the tree in water as soon as possible to help it last longer.
  • Check the water level of the stand daily – the water level shouldn’t dip below the base of the tree. In general, a stand should provide around one quart of water per inch of stem diameter.

And of course, once the holidays are over and you’re ready to take your tree down, be sure to recycle it.

Cartwright Tree Care wishes you and your family a very safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Tips gathered from The Old Farmer’s Almanac and the National Christmas Tree Association.
