Kansas City Trees – pros, cons and the effects on your home

Trees can be a stunning addition to your Kansas City home or commercial property.  They can offer shade and a break from the summers heat, beautiful fragrant blossoms, and depending on the tree possibly even an edible fruit or nut.

Trees have often been used to beautify and welcome people to their Kansas City neighborhood and property.  In the south, Live Oak trees can frequently be seen lining the drives of home, and here commonly in Kansas City we see the Bradford Pear used.  However, although beautiful and beneficial, trees can also pose potential risks and hazards. There are a few top pros and cons that we see as professional arborists.

Pros:

Beauty – trees can offer a lavish amount of beauty to your property. From Missouri’s state flower of the Dogwood, to the Kansas cottonwood and everything in between, we see a vast array of beautiful trees here in the Kansas City area.

Shade –  Trees can offer additional shade to your property or home.  This can be especially valuable during the summer months.  A.C costs rise every year and trees can provide valuable shade for you while working in the yard and can even cast helpful shadows, reducing your overall cooling costs.

Wildlife -  Here in Kansas City we see a vast array of beautiful birds.  Just this week in my own backyard I saw a female Cardinal, a Blue jay and a few Finches.   Well established trees on your property provide a home to wildlife.

Sustenance – Depending on the trees on your property you may even be able to enjoy fruits and nuts that it seasonally bears. Apple trees and walnut particularly common trees in Kansas City that also provide sustenance.

Cons:

Trimming needs and overgrowth – While trees are beautiful to look at and purposeful, they can grow quickly and become invasive to your home or property.  It is important to have regular tree trimming done to ensure they do not pose a hazard to the home, vehicles or near by power lines.

Foundation problems from roots – Another very common issue with trees becoming invasive is when their roots encroach on your foundation.  Roots of a tree typically grow as far out as do their leaves and branches. However, if you have regular tree trimming done by a professional Arborist you can put this fear mostly aside.  An Arborist can help properly guide you in trimming for guided growth and avoid stress weight on limbs.

Disease and Insect Control issues – Lastly the major other issue we see with trees that I would say can be a negative aspect of your property, is disease and pests.  Some disease and insects can be controlled, others can cause permanent damage or death to a tree.

All-in-all trees can be a beautiful addition to your residential or even commercial property.  However, if you are planting new trees, or maintaining current ones, be sure to seek out a local Arborist with Cartwright Tree Care so that you can avoid any of the cons of having a tree on your property.
