Planting fruit trees on your property can be very rewarding. Who doesn’t like fresh fruit, after all? Not to mention they are quite beautiful and add color to your property. However, fruit trees tend to grow pretty tall and can grow way more fruit than you need, which results in it being more of a hassle than anything. The following are a few tips to keep your fruit trees small:

Although you can buy seed for trees that will be smaller, don’t do this. Instead, pick the seed depending on how they will do in your climate. Dwarf trees will often have weaker roots.
  • If you plant several fruit trees, keep the seeds planted about 18 inches from one another. This spacing will provide competition for water, which will help control their size.
  • Prune your fruit trees in June during the summer solstice. Remove leafy growth to reduce photosynthesis, which will decrease the amount of food produced by the tree and help keep it short.

These are a few tips that you should use in order to keep fruit trees from growing too big. For additional tree maintenance tips be sure to contact us at Cartwright Tree Care today.
