After having that old damaged tree taken down, you're feeling pretty good about making the decision not to spend the extra money and have the stump removed. But as you walk around the yard you glance over and see new growth sprouting out of the stump and the surrounding roots. The last thing you want after going to all the trouble of getting rid of the tree is to have another one grow back in its place!

New sucker sprouts coming out of a tree stump is a common concern and one that can be remedied with just a little work. Pick up some ammonium sulfanate, glyphosate or dicamba herbicides at your local hardware store. Coat the entire stump with one of these herbicides and also apply liberally over the new sprouts themselves. Because the herbicide will damage surrounding vegetation, it is advisable to use a paint brush on the sprouts rather than spraying. Reapply more chemicals as long as new growth continues to emerge.
