While warmer months usually allow your greenery to thrive, winter can sometimes devastate trees and shrubs, causing them to wither or die before warmer weather returns. However, with certain preventative action, special tree and shrub care, and the help of tree care experts, you can get your plants through the winter months alive and healthy.

Depending on the types of trees or shrubs you have at your home or business, your greenery may need different types of care to survive the winter. Some of the most common winterizing techniques you can use include:

  • Shielding shrubs from strong winds with a windscreen. This is particularly helpful for newly planted shrubs.
  • Place an extra layer of mulch at least a few inches thick around the base of plants to prevent frost from building up.
  • Wrap twine tightly around tall, narrow shrubs so snow and ice do not build up on fragile branches.
  • Place erosion-control fabric around bushes near the road to prevent dehydration from road salt.

Use these techniques, in addition to consulting with a tree care specialist at Cartwright Tree Care, to ensure your trees and shrubs will make it through the winter, allowing you to enjoy them when warmer months come to Kansas City!
