University research regarding optimum tree healthcare has found that plants which are propagated from locally grown trees at least 25 to 30 years old have the greatest potential to handle transplant stress.

Concerns, say the tree care experts, are that selecting trees located outside a 300 mile radius or buying trees that come from younger tree stock aren't as capable of tolerating your local growing conditions.

Shipping trees long distance also causes stress and can reduce transplant success. When the weather and soil conditions in which the nursery tree is grown are similar to your local growing zone you increase the potential to survive considerably.

Both propagation by seed and cuttings taken from healthy older trees at least a quarter of a century old and grown in comparable conditions as your area produce excellent tree transplant stock. The older the tree, the hardier the genetic composition contributed to seeds and cuttings.

Help the environment by finding a place for one or more trees on your property. Ask your tree care professionals for advice in selecting locally grown varieties. It will also increase your property value.
