Shade can be quite nice to have, especially during the summer months. Some people may consider too much shade a bad thing since it makes it more difficult to grow other plants. However, there are plenty of things that can [grow in the shade of your trees](http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/47208145?utm_source=Houzz&utm_campaign=u1213&utm_medium=email&utm_content=gallery20) without much of a problem. In areas where there is a deep shade, which are areas that are exposed to very little light, you can grow plants that are commonly found on forest floors as well as bulbs that will bloom during the early spring and late autumn. These include ferns, Canadian hemlock and Virginia bluebells. You'll have way more options if there are any spaces on your property that are covered in light shade, where there's a bit more sunlight than in areas with deep shade. Here you'll be able to grow flowering dogwood and rhododendrons. In areas where sun and shade mix equally, try growing sassafras, sumacs and grasses in the Carex genus.
