# Rid Missouri and Kansas Trees of Anthracnose

Anthracnose strikes tree species including sycamores, maples, ash and some oaks. According to the University of Missouri, [Anthracnose](http://extension.missouri.edu/news/DisplayStory.aspx?N=1428) is an umbrella term for a number of fungal diseases.

 

**Signs of Anthracnose**

- Blotches on leaves where water collects in pockets between veins.

- Lesions, which look tan or black on sycamore.
- It can attack and kill [twigs and branches](http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7420.html), but is often not harmful to the overall health of many trees.

**How to Limit Spread **of Anthracnose****

- Rake and dispose of dead leaves.
- Anthracnose forms when water accumulates. So space new plants far enough apart to maximize air circulation and increase sunlight, both of which allow leaves to dry faster. (Source: [UC Davis](http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7420.html))
- Prune during winter to increase air circulation in the canopy.
