Trees and shrubs are a beautiful addition to any dwelling’s landscape. Unfortunately, many trees are susceptible to damage which then turns them into a cause of concern and potential hazard. A quick inspection of the trees surrounding your home can easily prevent unwanted property damage, or loss. Here is what you should look for:

  1. Visible cracks, splintering, leaning, or hanging of branches or trunk are signs of problems.
  2. Insect infestation, which is commonly noticed as sap seeping from the tree, loss of bark, and the sudden appearance of sawdust, can indicate weakening of the internal structure.
  3. Weak bonding of branches or independent trees is recognized at the site of the union. These points of contact and intergrowth tend to form a V, which can easily tear away under stressors. A U shape is a healthy joint.
  4. Obvious issues can be seen after the tree has sustained damage such as a hit by lightening, high winds, heavy rain, wet snow, dramatic icing, flooding, and other situations.

If you are unsure of the health of your trees, it is always best to contact a tree care specialist. Never attempt to fell a tree yourself; always contact a professional for tree maintenance.
