Summer is a rather stormy season here in Missouri. Many storms pack in quite a punch with lots of high winds, lightning, and some even spawning tornados, all of which can cause a great deal of damage to your trees. In the event that your trees receive damage during a storm of any sort, it’s important to avoid making hasty decisions because that can cause you to possibly loose a tree that could have been saved.
The University of Missouri suggests to follow the guidelines below when dealing with storm damaged trees.
- Assess the damage to the tree. Keep an eye out for structural damage like broken tree limbs or damage to the leader (the main upward trending branch on most trees).
- Be safe. It’s best not to break out the chain saw immediately after a storm damages your tree. Branches and trees that have been twisted and bent in a storm are under greater strain that what the eye can see and should be tended to by professionals.
- Be patient and let the professionals, such as city officials, utility workers, and/or tree care professionals, deal with the hazards a tree may pose to your property.
