This is because there has been an invasive beetle known as the Emerald Ash borer that has been killing millions of ash trees. Ash trees make up roughly 10 to 20 percent of the trees in urban cities, and the Emerald Ash Borer has become a particular problem in Leavenworth, Johnson and Wyandotte counties. Basically, the beetle will lay an egg on the bark of the tree. The egg will hatch and the larva will penetrate into the tree, feeding on its vascular system and eventually killing it.
