In spring, trees emerge from their winter dormant stage and begin to display new growth. Tree maintenance is extra important during this time to ensure trees become strong enough to last through the hot and dry summer.

Watering

Do not wait until your trees show signs of drought before you water them. Use a moisture meter to check for moisture around the drip line – the drip line is roughly the area of ground on the outer edge of the tree’s canopy. Soil should be moist to a depth of around 18 inches.

When the tree needs water, place a soaker hose around the drip line. Keep it there until water has soaked down to the appropriate depth.

Fertilizing

Most trees can use a boost of fertilizer around late spring. Choose one formulated for your tree type. Apply it around the drip line. Granular fertilizers will need to be watered in.

Soil

Check soil around the trees and amend soil when necessary. Clay soils prevent adequate moisture and nutrients from reaching tree roots, for example. The addition of sand and rich top soil can help. Heavily thatched grass around the drip line can also be problematic – dethatch the grass and aerate the soil.
