Think about what you want out of your tree this year and consider the following species for the one that suits you best. If you don't like a big mess, choose a tree that it does not drop its needles and shake off all dry needles before taking it indoors. If you have a lot of heavy or large ornaments, the branches must be strong enough to support the ornaments you put on it. Trees which hold their needles well include Nordmann and Balsam firs, while the Scotch pine has widely spaced branches which allow you to hang pendant ornaments. If the smell of a fresh tree is one of your favorite parts of the holiday, the Douglas pine, Scotch, and Balsam firs have good, lasting fragrance. These trees are all best kept in secure stands with water. If you want to plant the tree outside after Christmas, you can pay a bit more for a root-balled tree, which must be kept well watered in a pot. The best tree for this purpose is the Scotch pine which is hardy and long-lived.
