Caring for your Christmas Tree

Written by vkinney on December 21, 2010 . Posted in Tree Maintenance, Featured

Christmas is this Saturday! Many who love a fresh cut Christmas tree often wait until just days before Christmas to select a tree to decorate their homes with. If that’s you, check out a few of the tips we found from the National Christmas Tree Association to keep your tree looking fresh!

  • Display your tree in a traditional reservoir type of stand to maintain freshness and minimize needle loss.
  • Place your tree in water as soon as possible when you bring it home. Most species can go for about 6 to 8 hours after cutting the trunk and still take up water, but the sooner the tree is in water, the longer it will last.
  • As a general rule, stands should provide about 1 quart of water per inch of stem diameter.
  • Keep displayed trees away from heat sources such as fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, and direct sunlight, which can cause excessive drying, as well as create a potential fire hazard.
  • Check the stand daily and make sure the water level of the tree doesn’t go below the base of the tree.
  • Monitor the tree for freshness. After the Christmas tree, or when the tree is dry, remove it from your house.
  • After your tree has been taken down, visit www.realchristmastree.org to find a Christmas tree recycling program near you.
