On sultry summer days, there’s nothing like napping beneath the shade of a great tree in your yard. Shade trees also provide other benefits, like cooling your home in summer and acting as a windbreak in colder weather, which can save you money on heating and air conditioning.

While there are many shade trees to consider, if you need one to grow quickly, consider these four fast-growing shade trees:

  • Hybrid Poplar Capable of growing up to 9 feet in 12 months, the hybrid poplar has the reputation for being one of the fastest sprouting trees ever! Although it has a lifespan of only 35 years, the poplar can reach 50 feet into the sky.
  • Quaking Aspen With its highly-distinguishable smooth white bark and yellow foliage every autumn, the quaking aspen can flourish in many types of soil.
  • Silver Maple A third popular choice is the silver maple. With its wide-open canopy and branches directed heaven-ward, this maple can grow 80 feet high and 50 feet across; it’s the perfect mammoth tree to picnic beneath and seek reprieve from the noon-day sun.
  • Tulip Tree Appropriately named for its tulip-shaped leaves, the tulip tree bestows large lime-colored flowers in the spring and can reach 90 feet in height.
