There are thousands of companies in the U.S. that provide tree services such as pruning, removal, fertilization, cabling and bracing, disease and insect control, protection from lighting and more.  When considering a tree care company, remember that trees are alive.

Tree care company’s employees require a great deal of technical knowledge to provide appropriate care.  Inappropriate care can injure or even kill your trees.  Most consumers do not have the knowledge needed to determine the course of treatment or type of pruning that is appropriate for their trees.  You need to rely on the professional recommendations given by a tree service company.  That is why it is extremely important to check the credentials of a business claiming to be a tree care company.  Don’t just hire any tree service in Kansas City who knocks on your door with a chainsaw.

Tree care is also one of the most dangerous professions in the US, particularly if performed by amateurs or untrained personnel.  Statistics show tree care services are more dangerous than a police or fire departments work.  Most homeowners have no idea how deadly it can be.  Storms tend to bring out the fly-by-night companies.  Typically they are people with pickup trucks and chain saws going door to door seeking work after a storm, often uninsured and without the proper training.

Homeowners searching for qualified tree service companies should look for the following:

  • Proof of Insurance: Ask for current certificates of liability and workers’ compensation insurance, if applicable. Be aware that if the tree care company you hire doesn’t have insurance or is not a legal company, then you, the homeowner, could be responsible as a contractor.
  • Good References: Ask for local references, and check on the quality of their work and level of service. Don’t be rushed by a bargain, and don’t pay in advance.
  • Solid Reputation: Verify professional affiliations that company might have, such as memberships in business/ professional organizations such and TCIA!!!!
  • Comparisons: Get a second opinion and quote. Make sure you get these estimates in writing.
  • Up-to-Date Knowledge: A professional arborist will be aware of the current safety, pruning, fertilizing and cabling standards.
  • Cartwright Tree Care offers tree preservation and consulting.

Properly pruned and maintained trees add value to your property.  In fact, recent studies indicate that trees add 7% value to your property.  However, improper maintenance can impact your trees’ health, creating a safety hazard.  To insure that your trees remain assets and not liabilities, carefully choose your tree care professional.   Or just click below for a free evaluation of your trees and shrubs!
