Usually mature trees don't require a great deal of care. However, general maintenance goes a long way in keeping your trees healthy. Here are some tree maintenance tips:

Trees of all ages can benefit from a good careful pruning. While most experts agree that winter dormancy is the best time to prune, waiting until trees leaf out in the spring is an easy way to tell exactly which branches are dead.

  • Use mulch to hold moisture in and reduce weeds. Be careful not to pile it against the base of the trunk. This is an invitation for diseases such as canker to take hold.
  • While spring cleaning your yard, don't forget the trees. Remove any remaining holiday lights and rake small twigs and leaves from beneath trees to reduce fungus and mold. Once all danger of frost has past, cut off any protective winter wraps.
  • Check your sprinkler system. Water should not be allowed to pool for optimal tree health.
  • Perform a visual inspection. If you see something that looks out of the ordinary, contact a licensed tree care provider.
