Oak Mites_ What You Need to Know this Season

Oak Mites | What You Need to Know this Season

Last Summer and even into the Fall we heard all about the Oak Mite influx and the nasty bites they were leaving on Kansas City metro residents. These miserable little critters were feasting on our oaks and us! It looks like they aren’t going anywhere soon either.

This is now the third year in a row we are expecting an outbreak of oak mites. While not entirely preventable, there are some things that you should know and actions you can take to help deter these pests.

Though specifically named "Oak" mites, these critters can live in a variety of tree species. There is no way to keep an eye out or spot them on you like you would a tick or other insect. They cannot be seen with the naked eye. They are so small that they can even be carried by the wind.

These nasty insects are prevalent from April to August and last year we saw them quite early.

To prevent Oak Mites, you can have an annual spray applied to your trees. At Cartwright Tree Care we provide a once annual insect repellant that helps deter these issues. However, if the tree is already affected by the mites it will not do much good as the mites live deep inside the tree. Prevention is the way to go here if you can help it.

While the Oak Mite will do some damage to a tree eating up its leaves, it seems it does more harm to humans. The Oak Mite bites leave large welts and can be a painful nuisance. If you are working in the yard this year it is highly suggested to go ahead and treat your trees. Preventing the mites will free the extra effort and time you will need to take each time you work outside if you want to also prevent mite bites.

If you are concerned about Oak Mites this season like many other Kansas City metro residents, reach out to Cartwright Tree Care. Let one of our tree care professionals evaluate and treat your property for these seasonal pests.
