Sure, having at least a couple of trees growing on your property is sure to help improve your home’s curb appeal. But did you know that trees can actually help improve the quality of the air around your home as well? Trees and air quality have a significant relationship to each other, so caring for your home's trees can benefit your health just as much as the exterior look of your home.
A team of researchers from Portland State University recently discovered direct connections between the presence of mature trees located in a city and it's air quality. The study involved the placement of 144 sensors throughout Portland that provided neighborhood-specific air quality data. The scientists then compared this data with maps of the city’s tree canopy.
Additionally, the research team found that the amount of nitrogen dioxide (the air pollutant that is linked to the contribution of respiratory illnesses such as asthma) that was removed from the air by the area’s trees resulted in roughly $6.59 million saved every year due to a decrease in missed work or school days, hospitalizations, and emergency room visits.
