The Effects of Snow and Ice on Your Trees

The Effects of Snow & Ice on Your Trees

Winter was brutal this year, with a snow days for 5 consecutive weeks! All that heavy snow and ice we experienced caused some damage to our beautiful lush Kansas City trees. The weaker trees in your yard tend to suffer the worst damage as a result of a winter filled with snow and ice.

Many of our beautiful Elm, silver maples, birches, willows, and hackberry are tree species that simply can't handle the weight of the snow and ice the cover their limbs during a winter storm. Our smaller trees are most susceptible to snow and ice damage like; upright evergreens such as arborvitae and juniper, as well as clump trees, such as birch.

Our weaker tree species normally take the brunt of heavy snow and ice after a winter storm. Knowing how to manage your trees before and after a storm is pertinent to their health, longevity and safety of your trees.

As we all recover from the snow and ice, our trees are doing the same thing. Here are a few tips to help them heal and prepare for their favorite time of year, spring!

Clean Out Debris

Get your rake out! Rake up the dead leaves, loose branches and twigs. Create a clean area around the base of the tree so its roots are clear from any rotten debris that accumulated over the winter months.

Inspection Time

Dig out your magnifying glass and inspect your trees! Just kidding! But, you do need to look for any winter damage like dead, dying or broken branches, uplifted roots , etc. Also, check for any signs of insect damage or disease. Do this early spring, so your trees have time to heal and flourish before the growing season officially starts!

Hire A Professional

If you inspected your trees and found that they do contain broken, dead or dying branches or your tree shows signs of disease or insects, we recommend calling a professional and having your trees diagnosed and receive a plan of action.

Nourish Your Trees

Your trees are hungry! Hire a professional to feed your trees the proper (non-harmful) fertilizers they need to revitalize and regain strength, A strong trees can protect itself better from insects and diseases.
