Anthracnose is a type of fungal disease that tends to occur during the spring and largely affects trees such as sycamores and maples. It results in dark and sunken lesions on the leaves, fruits, flowers and stems of these types of trees. It can also occur on other plant life, such as roses and Boston Ivy.
Anthracnose is always present, it just needs the proper conditions in order to do any damage. Symptoms tend to show up during the spring because this is when the weather is usually at its most wet and the trees' leaves are emerging and soft. Fortunately, this fungal disease isn't a serious problem. The damage it causes is usually cosmetic, so although it can make your leaves look bad, it usually won't hurt the tree itself. The fungal disease usually affects leaves near the bottom of the tree's canopy where humidity is higher. The tree will usually just drop affected leaves. The fungal disease will withdraw during the summer when warmer, dryer weather arrives.
