Dec 28, 2010 4:15:12 AM If you used a **live Christmas tree** this holiday season, don’t forget to **recycle** it. Recycling your Christmas tree is a great, and green, way to get rid of your tree after the holiday decorations come down. Nationally, about 93% of live Christmas trees are recycled through community programs each year, according to [Recycle Your Christmas Tree](http://www.recycleyourchristmastree.com/about.html). Since Christmas trees are a **renewable resource**, recycling them means they are able to be reused for other materials. Most commonly, **Christmas trees are used for mulch**, as the mulch can provide benefits all year long, such as protecting other plants. **Chipping** is similar to mulch, which involves making wood chips from recycled Christmas trees that can be added to paths like walking trails. Recycled trees can also be added to compost piles and can be used as fish and bird feeders, as well as soil erosion barriers in some locations, according to [PickYourOwnChristmasTree.org](http://pickyourownchristmastree.org/disposing.php).
