3 quick tips for healthy trees throughout the winter (Winter 2017)

Written by vkinney on December 28, 2016 . Posted in Tree Maintenance, Featured

We have said it before and we’ll say it again – you must take good care of your trees throughout the winter months! Wind, snow, rain, and even winter drought can be very tough on your trees, but minimizing winter damage is quick and easy. Here are three tips we found on Associated Content that will help keep your trees healthy through the winter. In turn, they’ll look even more beautiful in the spring!

  1. Keep the trees well watered – We’ve mentioned this plenty of times, and that’s because often people forget that tree roots continue to absorb water during the winter months. If you’re experiencing a particularly dry winter, be sure to set up a regular watering schedule.
  2. Remove snow build up on tree branches – Heavy snow and ice accumulation on tree branches can permanently misshape a tree, or cause the branch to bend and potentially snap off. For a quick fix on small trees, take a broom and carefully knock the snow off the branches. For taller trees, you can gently shake or tap the trunk to loosen the snow in the upper branches. The key is to remove the snow as soon as possible.
  3. Prune off broken limbs when they happen – Broken limbs caused by wind or storm damage create the opportunity for pests and disease to infect a tree. To prevent that from happening, use a sharp pruning saw and cut off any remaining pieces of the branch in a clean cut that will allow the tree to heal properly.
