It has certainly been a long, tough winter in Kansas City. One of the many side effects of these winter storms is tree damage. If there are trees in your yard, now is the perfect time to check them for damage and weakness -- failing to do so could result in damage to your home, or even worse, fatal injuries to you and your family. Follow these steps to check trees for safety.

  1. Examine the tree for "wishbone weaknesses." These are swellings near the places where two branches meet. If you see what looks like a large, bubbly blister, this is a sign that a large branch is ready to snap.
  2. Check the direction that the tree is leaning. Trees that lean toward the east are most likely to blow down when a westerly wind blows through.
  3. Look for nesting holes made by woodpeckers. These are a sign that wood is decaying -- woodpeckers do not carve into healthy, solid wood.

If you do find a tree that looks damaged, the first step you should take is to contact reliable tree care services in Kansas City. Call the tree care experts at Cartwright Tree Care for all of your tree maintenance needs.
