Keeping up with tree maintenance in winter is an important key to having healthy trees through the spring and summer seasons. There are several things that can be done to ensure the health of your trees during the cold months.

Continue to water your trees - During the winter and fall your trees still absorb water. If you are experiencing a dry winter, remember to regularly water your trees if the temperatuers are above freezing. You may stop watering once the temperatures fall below freezing, but resume routine watering once temperatures warm back up. Consider setting a regular watering schedule so that you don't forget.

Keep broken branches in check - Here in Kansas City we can endure long winters with lots of snow and ice. Weakened branches can easily snap and make room for pests and disease to move in. If you notice snapped branches, pruning might be needed to give them a healthy cut.

Protection from pests - Those pests that plagued your tree during summer and fall will not just die. Unless they freeze solid, insects can hibernate and then resume their attack once spring comes. Snow can even help insulate the bugs' homes. Treat your trees as soon as you notice a pest problem to keep it from getting out of hand.
