Trees are one of the most powerful aspects to control when it comes to landscape design. For the best results, proper tree healthcare should always be observed when maintaining your scenery. If you're considering adding a tree to the yard, be very mindful of how it is being transplanted. New research at Colorado State University shows that various methods of tree transplantation can have differing impacts on the survival and future growth of the tree.

Balled and burlapped transplants demonstrated noticeably less growth during their first year post-transplant. However, they were more resilient to stress than trees transplanted in fabric containers. Fabric containers, though, required less frequent irrigation and no plants in fabric containers were lost during the study, while trees in burlap or plastic containers were lost. Conversely, plastic containers produced heavier root balls and resisted stress.

Some of their findings also showed that tree variety played a role in the effectiveness of transplant method: ash favored plastic containers while oak favored fabric. Additionally, in any method, damaged or dried root balls generally led to lost trees. What a tragedy, considering all their potential!
