With summer approaching and the last few summers being scorchers, homeowners need to start looking at ways to help protect their trees from the heat of summer. One way to do this is to ensure they retain as much water as they can. One method that not only works but looks great is mulching.
Why Mulch?
Mulching is an important part of tree maintenance as it covers the normally bare spot under the tree. Covering this with mulch prevents topsoil erosion while helping to retain moisture from evaporating. It also helps prevent weeds and promotes soil fertility and gives your yard a much more orderly look.
Mulching Properly
The key is not to use too much mulch. Normally a 2-4” layer is good. Too deep of a layer can cause root rot from too much moisture. Experts recommend organic mulches such as humus or wood bark as this helps keep the soil fertile. However, care must be taken to periodically fertilizer the tree with extra nitrogen since the natural rotting process will leach nitrogen out of the soil as the mulch breaks down.
Preventative Care
Many mulches help prevent deadly tree diseases. Mulching can also reduce the chance of damage from weed whackers and lawnmowers.
