A danger to the environment and economy has officially arrived in Kansas City. Thankfully, experts are using effective - albeit unorthodox - tactics to better understand this looming threat.

The emerald ash borer is a beetle that targets and kills ash trees. In just 11 years, these beetles have spread to 22 states, including Kansas and Missouri. The beetle was first spotted in Johnson County this July. Kansas City is home to around 400,000 ash trees, and the entire metropolitan area could have over 4 million.

In response to this potential hazard, Kansas City park officials cut chunks from the bark of 700 ash trees this spring. Experts hope ash borers will be lured to these specific ash trees, which are already dying. Not only will these “stressed” trees help to record the beetles' prevalence, they may also distract beetles from attacking healthy trees in the area.

Infestation is inevitable, but experts advise residents not to panic. This type of infestation occurs slowly, so there is still have plenty of time to consult a tree healthcare expert nearby and plan ahead.
