Here at Cartwright Tree care we want to provide quality service as well as educate those who are looking to learn more about plants and trees and how to maintenance them in a healthy way. Please continue to follow and share the News portion on our website for more tips and information about caring for your trees and other important parts of your property.

We want you to feel prepared for the winter and sleep well at night knowing you’ve done the best you can to winterize your trees. Using the How To Videos portion of our website, you can learn things about tree trimming and fertilization but today we would like to talk about the best ways to care for your trees with the winter months almost upon us.

We would first recommend preventative maintenance such as spreading mulch in a thick layer around the base of the tree. It not only provides insulation, adding a layer of warmth for the tree, but also helps to retain moisture in the soil beneath the mulch. In addition to those things, it provides nutrients as the mulch decomposes and nurtures the soil beneath. So, consider a layer of mulch and be sure to call us at 1-800-TREE-SERVICE if you have any questions on how to do that.

Another recommendation we would offer is more of a cautionary tale. We know how important it is to keep ice away from your porches and driveways with the use of rock salt, but we would advise you NOT to allow this sodium chloride near your trees. This can harm the tree by not allowing the roots to absorb water, oxygen and nutrients. If you have trees near your walkways, consider using a melting agent that contains things like calcium, potassium or magnesium chloride that are less harmful on the tree.
