Many people look forward to winter because it's a nice season-long break from yard work. But if you want a beautiful, healthy lawn come spring, now is the time to prep your lawn for winter.

  • Water your roots. This year has been a drought-stricken year for most of the country. Make sure if the air has been dry, that you water your lawn so that the roots are healthy and moist come winter weather.
  • Clean your yard. Yes, that includes raking. Dead leaves or any foreign objects that don't belong promote bacterial growth and damage the grass underneath.
  • Aeration. Aerating your yard is imperative to root expansion and to get oxygen to the bottom of your plants.
  • Fertilization. Fertilizing your yard now will lead to a beautiful, lush yard in the single, as the roots will need as much nutrients as it can get before the winter freeze.
  • Mow. Having short grass, even if it is turning brown, will lessen the chance of snow causing mold in your yard.
