Keeping Unwanted "Weed Trees" Under Control

While having trees on your property is a great way to improve curb appeal, you don’t want too many trees. Too many trees clumped together on your property not only looks bad, it can be a safety hazard as well. The following are a few tips for keeping “weed trees” from growing on your property.

Inspect your property regularly so that you can spot weed trees right as they first sprout. This way you can easily eliminate them by simply digging them out or even pulling them out when they are still small. If you leave the seedlings growing for too long, it’s going to be tougher to get rid of them.

If the seedling has grown into a small tree, you may need to cut it down. The problem with this is that weed trees can produce suckers from below the cut. Girdle the weed tree instead by cutting an inch strip of bark around its trunk. Make the cut so that it penetrates the trunk’s hard center. This will slowly kill the tree over the course of a year or so.
