Winter has finally arrived. If you couldn’t tell by the dropping temperatures, then you could probably tell from the bare trees. However, you may have noticed that not all leaves have fallen from their trees yet. If some of the trees on your property still have their leaves, don’t worry – this is normal.
Some trees retain their leaves even during the winter, such as pin oaks. However, you may notice a few trees that normally lose their leaves during this time of the year that are keeping hold of them. When this occurs it’s known as marcescence. This is a condition in which the leaves wither but don’t fall. This happens due to strange changes in the weather, like a period of warm weather immediately followed by a sharp drop in temperature. This sudden drop in temperature didn’t give the leaves proper preparation time to fall. Nature should take its course and these leaves should fall eventually. The only issue it might result in is if an ice storm or a wet snow comes through, which could result in more limb breakage.
