May's Tree of the Month: Golden Currant

Written by cartwrighttreecare on June 01, 2012 . Posted in News and events

Agolden currantThe Golden Currant is an attractive shrub with edible fruit. A hearty plant, common in sandy areas of Kansas and Missouri.

The yellow blossoms are followed by a  small, rounded, edible fruit which is dark purple when ripe. The edible fruit can be good in pies, jam and jelly...with a tasty recipe!

The deciduous shrub prefers well-drained soil and provides food and shelter for songbirds. The blooms have a clover smell which many find appealing. The golden currant is a dual-use species, and is therefore good for both ornamental and conservation purposes. It can be used as a soil stabilizer; ask a landscaping professional for details.
