The Kansas City Star reported that The Missouri Department of Transportation will purchase 250,000 seedlings to replace trees eliminated during highway construction projects.
Missouri’s Trees for Tomorrow program is involved. Since it began in 2007, Trees for Tomorrow has planted approximately 2.5 million trees of about 60 varieties. The program includes youths from Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, among other programs.
In a statement on its website, Trees for Tomorrow states:
"By providing them to youth groups, we’re putting trees in good hands that will help them thrive...We’re proud to work with MoDOT and kids all over Missouri to get trees planted, improve our environment and enhance the natural beauty of our state.”
Experts will be involved in the replacing of the trees, ensuring that they are in keeping with Kansas City's climate, soil, existing landscaping, and erosion control needs. Overall, two trees will be replanted for every one tree removed.
