Missouri's Most Abundant Trees

Written by vkinney on August 25, 2011 . Posted in Featured, News and events

Did you know that more than 30 percent of the land in the state of Missouri is forested? Out of all those trees, oak trees are the most abundant, according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. Oak trees are also quite common in landscapes in Missouri, so chances are you might have one in your yard.

We have 21 species of oak trees that grow wild here in Missouri and about 54 in North America, which is rather significant when compared to Europe, where there are just three to five species growing in the wild.

Oak trees are not only the most abundant trees in our state – they are also among our most important. Oak trees provide food to animals such as deer and squirrels. Additionally, oak trees belong to the group called “hardwood trees” and are an important source for lumber, which aids our economy since the wood from oak trees is used to make things like furniture and cabinets.

Do you have oak trees growing on your property? If so, have they been there for many years? We’d love to hear about the trees growing in your yard, so leave us a comment to share.

And for the care and maintenance of your oaks and other trees, count on the professionals at Cartwright Tree Care.
