Now that winter has almost passed, we can all begin to look forward to the warmer temperatures of spring. Because it’s only a matter of time before you no longer have to worry about ice or snowfall, you can begin to prune your property’s shrubs and trees. The following are a few tree and shrub care tips to keep in mind as you do this:
- When pruning, avoid top pruning. Some plants, such as honeysuckle, lilacs, mockorange and more, will form flower buds on the growth that was produced form the previous year. If you top prune these plants, you’ll lose the flowers.
- Prune any overgrown shrubs by removing a few of the canes all the way to the ground. This will help let light into the middle of the plant as well as prevent the leggy appearance caused by becoming overgrown.
- Look for broken, diseased or dead branches on the trees on your property. These branches should be removed by cutting outside the branch collar, which is located at the base of the branch.
