Pruning in Fall is a Myth: Know When You Should Really Prune

For some reason, there’s a misconception that the best time to prune your trees is during the fall. This is actually not true. In fact, this is the worst time to prune your trees. This is because trees heal slower when pruned in the fall and decay fungi spreads their spores more during this time of the year. The following are a few tips on when you should prune your trees.

Winter is usually the best time to prune your trees because they are dormant. By pruning in the winter, your trees will experience a burst of new growth when spring rolls around. Try to wait until the coldest part of the season has passed before pruning your trees – and don’t worry too much about sap leaking out on trees such as maples, birches or walnuts.

If you’re looking to direct the growth of your trees by slowing the development of branches, then prune your trees during the summer. It’s also much easier to spot defective limbs during the summer.
