- Know the mature size – Most trees that you can buy at a nursery are only a few years old. Before picking out a tree for your patio, make sure you know how tall it will get as it matures. Many nurseries will only state how big they get after 20 or so years – but they can continue growing after that!

- Consider the shape – Upright trees tend to be better options for smaller areas since they will take up less overall space. But also keep in mind that upright trees don’t offer the best shade either.
- Consider the rate of growth – Slow growing trees may not provide the effect you want, but fast growing trees may be too much to handle in terms of tree maintenance.
