We certainly love our shade trees in the summer. They give us a great place to seek a little relief from the sun when we’re out taking care of our yard work, or even a place to sit in a chair and enjoy a glass of water or lemonade while chatting with family and friends. For those who don’t have adequate shade in their yards, a shade tree is a very coveted item.
There are several kinds of shade trees that are great for Missouri landscapes. Gardenguides.com suggests the following:
- Large Missouri shade trees grow to heights of over 60 feet tall. They include the American sycamore, bald cypress, bur oak, English oak, green ash, honey locust, Norway maple, red maple, red oak, silver maple, sweet gum, and white ash.
- Medium-sized shade trees usually grow to heights of 30 to 60 feet. Shade trees for Missouri landscapes that reach a medium size include the following species: black gum, ginkgo, linden, river birch, and yellowwood.
- Small shade trees are those that grow no higher than 30 feet. Common small shade trees in Missouri include the Amur maple, golden-rain, and Trident maple trees.
